Flintshire Freeze 3 Sutton Sting 11

Flintshire Freeze 7 Sheffield Senators 5

October 23, 2011

Freeze’s Sin Bin Sorrows don’t stop a Storming Victory over Sheffield Senators.

Sunday night saw Sheffield Senators visit Deeside Ice Rink for the second time this season following an earlier bad tempered encounter which saw the Freeze come out victorious. A good crowd eagerly anticipated the rematch and were not disappointed as Freeze fought back from being 2 nil down to take the victory, but at a significant cost in penalty points for the Deeside team.

The first period started with both Captain Mark Lovell and Assistant Captain Chris Jones testing Roxburgh in the Senator’s goal with some probing shots. Within 5 mins James Parsons is in the sin bin for high sticks but the Freeze defence dig in until his return to the ice and combined with Gavin Austin to put more pressure on the Senators goal before the posts are knocked out and stop the attack. With Matt Wainright in the bin for tripping the Freeze again find themselves a man down but make the most of it with C Jones firing in a hot shot from the blue line only to see it saved as they get back to full strength. Against the play, Senators suddenly steal an unassisted goal when the puck drifts down the ice for Rawson to be first on the score sheet. Back to the Senator’s goal and after a goal mouth kerfuffle, a frustrated Freeze’s Parsons resorts to a check from behind and is punished with 2 + 10.  Matty Compton pulls off some great saves between the Freeze posts to prevent the Senators scoring  while 5 on 3 as Callum Ruddick is binned for 2 mins for hooking and Senators are handed the chance of as power play goal on a plate, but they fail to take advantage as the Freeze’s defence does a great job then relaxed too soon  – immediately they are back to 4 on 5 the Senators stick in a second goal. Period score: 0-2. SOG made: FF – 17, SS: 15. Senators took no penalties this period whilst the freeze accumulated 18 minutes.

Freeze came out firing on all cylinders the second period – whatever the Coach Karl Creamer had said to them obviously worked as, within 30 secs, they were on the score sheet with a goal from Andy Chappell assisted by C Jones and Ruddick. Senators were not going to give in and hit the post with a shot seconds after the restart. When Wainwright shoved an encroaching Senator’s forward out of his goal mouth, Comptonwas handed 2 mins for high sticks which was served by C Jones. With Dave Swanston already in the bin for interference, the Freeze were again down to 3 on 5 when players from both teams were binned for roughing.   A Lovell solo effort came really close and panicked Senator’s Manning into being binned for slashing. As soon as the teams are even handed the Senators again sneak in a goal to take it to 1-3.  In the Freeze goal, Comptonpulls off one incredible save after another and his efforts are rewarded when, from the restart, Parsons picks up the puck in front of the Freeze goal and flies down the ice for the home team’s 2nd goal assisted by Furnival and Ruddick. A Senator slap shot from the blue line bobbled up ofCompton’s stick to take the score to 2- 4 with a power play goal from Senator’s no 4 Rawson, but just 10 secs later, Parsons coolly takes it to 3 – 4 to keep the Freeze in it with just under 10 mins left in the period. And what a 10 mins!!! Great play from both teams kept it clean and skill full. Play was mostly down the Senator’s net but the effort and skill from both teams was really appreciated by the crowd. Score: 3-4, SOG made FF: 20, SS; 11.

Third period – and the Freeze’s hard work pays off inside 2 minutes with another goal for Furnival to draw it level at 4 all. They keep up the pressure and finally take the lead just after 5 mins with a beautifully worked even handed goal from C Jones.  An unhappy Senator’s Chapman decided to spoil his celebrations with a punch and ended up in the bin for 2 minutes for roughing. But Freeze again failed to take advantage of the power play despite C Jones flashing a slot tantalisingly across the crease. Back to full strength, then the Senators got an icing infringement which saw them down to 4 and the Freeze take advantage to take a power play 6th goal squirmed in behind the Senator’s goalie by Simister behind the far post from a Wainwright pass. Sweet. Then Parsons picks up a loose puck just after the restart and shimmies downs the ice to slot it in for his hat trick – 7 – 4.  Mere seconds pass again before another goal – this time, the Senators get goal number 5 – and they immediately call a time out – to re group and re focus. Good idea, but didn’t work this time as the Freeze are on fire and throw everything forward. Both teams try their best, and with 6 mins left Freeze’s Captain is unusually in the bin – and for a big penalty, including 2 + 10 for checking to the head. Freezes are frazzled by the heavy penalties and are even more bemused whenCompton, diving to make at save at the feet of Senator’s Gray, is given 2mins for roughing against his penalty for slashing.

Retaliating to an extremely hard check to the boards, C Jones picked up 2 mins for hooking andCompton10 mins for abuse at the end of the match. But never mind. We won!!!!  7 -5

MoM: SS- No 4: Rawson

FF – No 5: James ’Snipper’ Parsons

Total shots on goal: faced by FF: 33 , by SS: 53

The Freeze Team

Flintshire Freeze 7 Bradford Bulldogs 3

October 16, 2011

Freeze muzzle Bradford Bulldogs to take another hard fought win.

After a 12 -1 drubbing of Lancashire Raptors at Blackburn the previous night, on Sunday Deeside Leisure Centre played host to Bradford Bulldogs once again, having beaten them 6 – 4 at home two weeks previously. Another small home crowd was once again treated to an incident packed game which resulted in yet another double winning weekend for the Deeside team.

With Compton back in goal after serving a match ban following the feisty Sheffield game last weekend (see the website report for a full account!) it wasn’t long before the Freeze were on the score sheet when top scorer Chris Jones picked up the puck from a restart after a Bulldog’s offside at the other end and scored with his second attempt for a great unassisted goal.  Practically from the restart, captain Mark Lovell celebrated his return from honeymoon a mere 25 seconds later by lifting the puck  from a Si Furnival pass into the roof of the net for a 2 – 0 lead. When Mike Jones was sin binned for 2 mins for interference, Bradford’s Dacres took advantage of the power play for Bulldog’s first goal. Controversially, on 8 mins 30 secs C Jones was given 5 plus game for an accidental high sticks under new rules which call for tough penalties when blood is drawn. The Freeze regrouped and the ref was soon handing out more penalties, including Bulldog’s goal scorer Dacres receiving 10 mins for incitement.  Team mate Balmer slipped in another power play goal to take it to 2 all but, when both teams got back to full strength, it was the Freeze who put the work in. Furnival and James Parsons  threw shots at the Bradford net and Compton held firm between the Freeze posts until the pressure finally paid off when Steve Fellows passed to Parsons for a lovely wrap around goal to end the period up at 3 -2. SOG made: FF – 11, BB – 13.

The start of the second period saw Freeze defend well when a man down and then find themselves a man up when Bradford’s Balmer is binned for 2 minutes for slashing. For the first time in the game, the Freeze take advantage of the power play when Furnival turns in a pass from Lovell to take it to 4 – 2. With fewer penalties being called this was great period to watch with players from both sides showing some skilfull play. This eventually ended with the Freeze’s fifth goal when Parker in the Bradford net fumbles a shot from Ben Simister assist by Matt Wainwright – again playing a solid game in defence.  Bradford’s Balmer is back in the bin after a difference of opinion with Freeze’s Callum Ruddick sees them both in the bin for slashing but the Freeze are again the last to have a say in this period when Lovell, assisted by Parsons and Furnival, scores Flintshire’s 5th over Bradford’s netminder Parker flat out on the ice after a save from a Furnival shot. With 4 minutes left Parker, having faced another 13 Freeze shots this period, is replaced by Brown between the Bradford posts. Period score:5 – 2. SOG faced: FF – 13, BB – 15.

The third period started with Bulldog’s Balmer once again sitting out 2 mins – for his third slashing call. Freeze’s Gavin Austin is later binned for 2 minutes for tripping and, a man down, the Freeze defence has to again hold firm forcing some crucial clearances from Crompton. Once again Bradford take the opportunity of the power play with a goal from Stockton to take it to 5 – 3. Bulldog’s Balmer was once more in the sin bin for hooking, and there again 8 secs after the end of that two minutes, when he stepped out from the sin bin onto the ice to immediately have a disagreement with a passing Dave Swanston.  He got no further than a yard from the sin bin and the kerfuffle he started saw them both get roughing penalties. Bradford’s Dacres soon joined him with 2 mins for holding the stick and finding themselves 4 on 3, Freeze went on the attack. A clearance from Crompton saw Simister pass down the ice to Chappell in front of the Bradford goal, who sweetly lifted the puck into the roof of the net for the final goal of the match to take it to 7 – 3. The end of the game saw another Freeze player in the bin for high sticks – this time Lovell – and the crowd held their breath as the offended Bulldog’s player recovered, but the penalty this time was not so severe. 7-3 Win.

Total SOG made:- FF – 45, BB – 35.

MOM: BB- 6 – Joshua Stockton (1 goal)

FF – 91 – Captain Fantastic Marc Lovell (2 goals)
